#1: Warning ! Ignition Fuse Blows when I try to ride off. [SOLVED] Author: Line_Producer Post Posted: Mon May 03, 2010 6:21 pm

Well, my bike is sitting in the parking lot of the hardware store. Luckily it's only a mile from my house.

I turned off the bike, walked in, walked out, it had blown the ignition fuse. I replaced the fuse and the bike started right up. I put it into first, took off, and the bike died.

I replaced it again. Same problem. What is going on here? How could something change in the five minutes it took in the store?

What should I be looking for that could be blowing the ignition?

Silly question, can I just..I dunno, stick some wire in there so I can drive the mile home? ;)

Thanks for the help.

start checking your wiring back from the fuse box for a hot wire going to ground...also check for a loose positive wire connection at the battery...check your ignition switch connections

Hey fellas, thanks for the replies. I'm going to be headed back to the parking lot with my electrical tape and my haynes manual.

I think I have a small fray in the red wire coming off the starter solenoid located next to the battery. Would a frayed wire exposed to the air be the cause of a complete short?

Red, the sig shows up in my screen, is it not in yours?

So when the RPM's increased, the fuse blew. If the bike is left to idle, it'll keep running? The cutoff point wouldn't be right around 2,000 RPM, would it, 'cause that's when the rectifier/regulator begins to allow the battery to be charged. The regulator is supposed to prevent surges and overcharge amps coming from the alternator. If it chose this moment to go south, how could it be easily tested?

Yep, it's about that point. I'm going back to the lot in the morning. I'm going to make sure that all the wires are capped/wrapped/ungrounded. If it's still popping fuses, I have to walk it the mile back to the house.

There has to be some way for you to get it home tonight, even if you have to round up a cousin with a shotgun to cover you while you push it home in the dark. I don't think I could bring myself to leave it there all night. It would make for a far longer night than I ever want to live through again, that's for sure.

Hahaha, good point. It's only a mile. I'll just load up on carbs ;). I'll post in the morning from the garage with an electrical update.

Tip:

Pushing a dead motorcycle at midnight in a ski mask is a good reason for the cops to pull you over. doh

I wish I had a camera for a photo.

Solution:

1. I had a crack in the red wire coming off the solenoid on the right hand side of the battery.

2. One of my relays had jiggled lose.

I'm back on the road again. Woohoo!
